How to use your smudge stick:
*If you prefer not to burn your smudge stick, you can simply use it as decoration around the house. Try hanging it from a window or lay it down on a shelf next to an incense burner to create a feel good corner.
Things you'll need:
- A bowl or abalone shell (something that will be able to tolerate heat)
- Matches, a lit candle or a lighter
- Sand or salt
- A feather or hand held fan
Pour some sand or salt into the bowl. This will be to lay the stick in while you do your smudging to catch any embers and ensure that your hand doesn't burn. Always practice safety when you smudge.
Open a few windows in your home to allow for negative energy to escape.
To smudge your home:
Set an intention or wishes for your home and family. This is key! You want to welcome these intentions/wishes into your space. Be sure to be in a positive state of mind.
Holding the one end of the smudge stick, gently light the other end and then softly blow out any flames. It should start to smolder and let off an aromatic white smoke. If it dies, just keep relighting it. You may need to do this a few times while you smudge.
Start at the front door of your home. Light your smudge stick and begin to move clockwise through your home. Do this mindfully with care and intent. Use your feather to wave the smoke into each room of the house, going into every nook and cranny like cupboards, under the bed and especially focusing on high traffic areas like the couch or dinning room table, etc. Try and say some sort of smudging prayer if you're comfortable with it.
Example:
”Any energy that may have entered this space that is not of love and light, may it be cleared and transmuted into love and positive vibrations. I cleanse this space and make it clear".
End at your front door, clearing out the last bit of negative energy out through the door. You can choose to let your smudge stick die out naturally by leaving it in the bowl somewhere where you can keep an eye on it, or you can extinguish it by dipping it into the sand/salt in the bowl.
To smudge yourself:
Stand up and light your smudge stick. Start smudging yourself, moving the stick around your arms, torso, head, legs and your feet by lifting them off the ground. Let the smoke float through your fingers. Wave the smoke all over your body.
Remember to keep your intentions strong and clear in your mind and say your prayer to assist in cleansing.
Example:
”Into this smoke, I release all energies that no longer serve me, all negativity that surrounds me and all fears that limit me.”
”Any energy that may have attached itself to me that is not of love and light and not for my highest good ,may it be cleared and transmuted into love”.
When you are done smudging, be sure to enjoy your cleansed and positive energy space/self by taking some time to relax. Sit down for a while, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Maybe light some candles and enjoy a warm bath.
Happy Smudging!
