How to make a Macrame Bookmark with a few Household Items
DIY Macrame Bookmark
If you're a crafty bookworm like me then I think you might enjoy this one.
It shouldn't take you more than 45 minutes - 1 hour to make, and you only need a few household items so let's get into it.
What you'll need:
- Some rope, 4 metres of it. It can be anything you like really. I’m using 2mm cotton rope. If you don’t have or can’t find something similar, don’t stress, you can still do this. You can use something like crochet thread, embroidery thread, wool, ribbon, or anything that isn’t too chunky and you can get 4 meters of it.
- A pair of scissors
- 2 x sewing pins
- A cushion
Step 1:
Take your rope (or whatever you have decided to use) and cut 2 pieces, each 2m long. If your rope is 4m long, just cut it in half.
Step 2:
Take 1 piece of rope. Measure 30cm and fold the rope at that point. Place it on the cushion with the short strand of rope on the right hand side.
Stick a pin into the fold to secure it to the cushion.
Step 3:
Take the second piece of rope and repeat. Measure 30cm, fold the rope at that point and place it on the cushion next to the first piece, making sure that the short strand is on the left hand side. The 2 short strands should be next to each other in the middle.
Stick a pin into the fold to secure it to the cushion. Make sure that the 2 pieces of rope are pinned close to each other. Let's macrame!
Step 4:
Take the outer left strand and make a "4" shape over the 2 inner strands. Make sure that the right outer strand lies on top of the "4" tail as shown.
Push the right outer strand underneath the tail and 2 inner strands and pull it through the loop of the "4".
Pull on the 2 outer strands, making sure to the keep the 2 inner strands straight.
Pull the knot tight up towards the pins until it sits nice and snug.
Step 5:
We're now going to do exactly the same thing but in reverse. Take the outer right side strand and make a "4" shape over the 2 inner strands, making sure that the left outer strand is over the "4" tail as shown.

Push the left outer strand underneath the tail and 2 inner strands and pull it through the loop of the "4".
Pull the knot tight up towards the pins until it sits nice and snug. You have just created your first Square Knot.
Step 6:
Continue making square knots, being sure to alternate between left and right as shown in the previous steps. It's important to keep track of this otherwise you'll be able to see where you have made a mistake. The great thing is that you can undo the knots to fix a mistake. It just takes a bit of practice.
Continue all the way down until you have about 7cm left on the short inner strands.
Step 7:
Tie a knot at the ends of the inner strands. Do the same with the outer strands and cut the excess rope off.
You have just made your very own macrame bookmark. Happy knotting and happy reading!
We'd love to see your macrame creation.
